Sully Weather

In the next few weeks, residents and non-residents of Sully will have an opportunity to provide their input on changes and improvements you believe would be helpful to the community of Sully.  This will be an opportunity for you to anonymously grade the city’s services and facilities plus share your thoughts/opinions about the needs of the Sully community.  The Sully Betterment Committee is developing a “City of Sully Questionnaire” that will assist in identifying and planning projects and their priorities.   It is important that several people provide responses.  Your input will help direct Sully’s future and decisions by Sully’s leaders.

Responses will be asked for in the following areas:

  1. City of Sully Infrastructure & Services – Responses will be asked for things like adding more stop signs, establishing a community foundation, and rating the facilities and services of the city.
  2. Community Improvements – Are there needs, amenities, or businesses that would help attract visitors and families to the community of Sully?  This is an area where it will be okay to dream and ask yourself “what if?”.  It will be important to think outside the box for this area.
  3. Community Activities – The July 4th Celebration is a long standing event that the community of Sully is known for.  This part of the questionnaire will attempt to identify other activities that should be considered.  These would be activities that add to Sully’s “Quality of Life” and “Family Friendly” experience.

The results of the questionnaire will be published in the Hometown Press and through the City of Sully’s monthly eblast.  The Sully Betterment Committee will be reviewing the questionnaire responses with community leaders from Lynnville to determine if there are projects that could possibly be worked on jointly.   The committee asks that you begin thinking about the areas described above.  The Sully Betterment Committee’s members are representatives from the City of Sully, Sully Development, JEDCO, and other community/business persons.  More information will be provided later on how the questionnaire will be distributed and how you can provide your responses.

The City of Sully was one of the sponsors of the First Annual Business Appreciation Night held during the Lynnville-Sully varsity basketball games on Feb. 4, 2012. They teamed up with the City of Lynnville, Sully Development, Lynnville Chamber of Commerce, and the Lynnville-Sully School District to recognize over 100 businesses that provide a wide array of services to the community, as well as demonstrate exemplary commitment to keeping our small towns on the map. In the large group photo, representatives from 43 businesses received a round of applause during halftime of the boys game on Feb. 4. These businesses play a vital role in our community and schools and were recognized for the services they provide and support they generously give.

As a way to say thanks, each business received two game tickets, which were also concession stand vouchers. Teryl Ver Ploeg, representing Sully Development, was the emcee during the honor ceremony.

A new year is upon us and I cannot complain about the winter season of 2012. There are five items that are coming that are noteworthy:

1) Soon to come is a questionnaire that will be asking for your opinion on how the City of Sully is doing on different items. This is one way to give the Sully City Council your feedback and direction and help us know where we are making a difference and where we need to step up to the plate and make a change. The more responses we receive, the better direction we can have in what the community of Sully is seeing and needing.

2) Another part of this questionnaire is community activities. Sully is known for the Fourth of July celebration but what else is there that you would like to see happen in Sully and would take an active part in working to make happen. Sully has a Continuous Improvement attitude. If we do not look to improve, we become stale. When people look for communities to move to, they are looking for one that is active and fresh.

3) In 2012, the City of Sully is taking a hard look at water infiltration into our sanitary sewer system and how we can divert clean water (rain) from reaching the sanitary system. One of these projects will be discussed this coming week during the city council meeting. I would encourage you to come and listen or discuss this project with a city representative.

4) The City of Sully is going to work on the tennis court this year, either relocating or upgrading the current one. If you have an interest in helping with this project, please contact me and give your input about it.

5) Another activity we are working to provide to companies in the Sully community is the Sully Ambassadors. This is service to businesses that are bringing people into the community to hire for a open position and would like a couple people to escort them around the Sully/Lynnville area to show them what the community has to offer them in the way of housing, schools, churches, recreation, businesses, etc., giving them a taste of the Sully community and showing them the Sully quality of life that we have all come to enjoy. If you are interested in hearing more, talk to a Sully Betterment member or give me a call.

As always, please call me or talk to me when you see me. Let me know what is on your mind and things we can look at improving. You have a great opportunity with the coming questionnaire, so please take the time to fill it out and return it so you can have a larger impact on our community.

LYNNVILLE-SULLY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT
2012-2013 KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
FOR PARENTS ONLY
----------------------------------
Tuesday, February 7, 2012 @ 3:35 P.M.

The kindergarten registration for parents is scheduled for February 7th at 3:35 p.m. in the elementary/middle school north media center.  We ask that children not be brought to this meeting.

You will need to bring your child’s birth certificate for verification of the date of birth.  The hospital issued birth certificate will meet the verification requirement.  You also need to obtain a social security number for registration.

Children must be five years old by September 15, 2012 to be enrolled in kindergarten.  You will be given registration forms to fill out with some of them to be turned in before you leave and others to be turned in at the fall registration.

If you cannot be present at this meeting, please call the school at 594-4445, ext. 125, and we’ll send you the necessary forms.

Please use the south parking area during registration.  Park in the marked stall areas and come around to the west doors to enter the building.  This will eliminate congestion around the bus loading area.

The kindergarten screening date is scheduled for April 18th, 2012.    You will receive more information about the child screening during the registration meeting.

The City’s animal protection and control ordinance requires pet owners to license their pets with the city.  Pet licensing will assist the city when addressing citizen complaints involving pets and will make it easier for impounded pets to be returned to their owners.

All dogs, cats and ferrets over six (6) months of age kept within the city are required to be licensed by April 1st each year.  Owners must provide proof of current rabies vaccination for each pet and also proof from a licensed veterinarian if the animal has been spayed or neutered.

Sully pet license fees: $10 for each intact animal or $8 if the animal has been spayed or neutered.  A surcharge of $5 will be added to the license fee of any dog, cat or ferret where the owner has 3 or more such animals.  A $10 penalty for each animal will be assessed on and after April 3, 2012.

Application forms are available from the city website www.sullyia.com and from the city office during normal business hours.
