For the second consecutive year, the Lynnville-Sully High School boys basketball team qualified for the state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The opening game battle between L-S and Northern University High was evenly contested with both teams entering the state tournament with a 23-2 record and a 13-game win streak on the line on Mar. 7. Plagued by cold shooting and turnovers, the Hawks went home with a 54-46 disappointing loss to end their season with a record of 23-3 and with a share of the SICL conference title. The five seniors who won't be on the team next year are Ben Schwartz, David Samson, Ryan Van Kooten, Andrew Van Wyk, and Logan Vos.

Removal of the old floor tile and installation of new ceramic tile in the Sully Community Center was scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 7, and was to be completed by the end of the week. However as usually happens with remodeling or construction projects, the process took longer than expected.

Work began on Feb. 7 as scheduled in the kitchen and back hallway area but due to scheduling issues and a shortage of materials, the restrooms and front hallway were not completed until the end of the month. The new ceramic tile floor is now totally in place and has received many positive comments.

The photos show the new hallway and the new ceramic tiles in the kitchen.

Infiltration: The Sully City Council is in the process of tackling the infiltration problem in our sewer system with the help of Garden & Associates Engineering. Infiltration is ground water that is filtering into the sewer system and not draining down through the ground. This is causing two problems: 1) the water is causing the sewer lines to overfill backing waste water into basements and 2) allowing too much runoff water into our lagoon system pushing high ammonia levels into the discharge stream.

Our first look was to line the mains but found that this would only reduce the infiltration by roughly 20% at a very high cost to the city. We were directed to look at a higher percentage which comes from the connections between the home to the main sewer line. This has been determined by other cities working on the same issue. The engineering firm looked at the topography of the city and determined where the low / flat areas are that do not allow the water to drain away. Three areas were selected in the southwest and west central areas of Sully. In these areas, the engineering firm is putting a plan together to install new connections from the home to the main line.

Much discussion has taken place as how to pay for this undertaking and the council at this time is leaning towards funding the project through the sewer fees and applying for a low interest loan through the State of Iowa. Please keep tuned to the local newspaper to see what is taking place or attend the regular council meeting to voice your views.

Pet Licensing:  Pet licensing, why in small town Sully? In 2010, Sully had four major incidents involving dogs. Two people were bitten, one person chased, and another person’s pets attacked. With all these incidents taking place, we had no way of knowing whose animal they were and if they belonged to a person in town or if they were strays. This led the council to take action to control the pets within the city limits of Sully.

I have been asked several times why should I get a license for my pet? If you choose not to license your pet by April 1,2011, and your pet is picked up running loose, the fine for not having your pet licensed is high and you will still have to pay for the license before the pet will be released. You will have to produce current shot records or the pet will have shots given and if not claimed within a specified time limit the animal will be disposed of. I have two pets and this is the last thing I’d want the city to have to do--dispose of someone’s pet which is why if they have the license on them then we can return the pet to its rightful owner.

Please take the time to register your dog or cat with the City Clerk ASAP. After April 1, 2011, the city staff will collect any animal running at large, which is against city ordinance. We will make every attempt to find the owner by placing ads in the newspapers. Any questions or concerns, please contact one of the council members, the city clerk, or myself.

Thank you, Gordon Yarrington, Mayor.

Three years ago the City Council approved a project to remake the Sully, Iowa website. The new site was designed to include a business directory, calendar, news articles, gallery, monthly newsletter and an overview of the different organizations and services that serve our community. The website you know went live in the summer of 2008 and since then has received over 50,000 visits and averages about 2,500 page views per month. Additionally, the City's electronic newsletter is emailed out to approximately 450 subscribers each month.

As our website approaches its third birthday we've taken the opportunity to update the supporting software, refresh the appearance and optimize our efficiency. Late next week, pending final approval from the City Council, the optimized website will be published online. We hope you enjoy the new format and as always if you have any questions or content to share please contact the city office at 594-3493 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Last fall the City Council adopted a new animal protection and control ordinance.  This new ordinance requires pet owners to license their pets with the city. Pet licensing will assist the city when addressing citizen complaints involving pets and will make it easier for impounded pets to be returned to their owners.

All dogs, cats and ferrets over six (6) months of age kept within the city are required to be licensed by April 1st each year. Owners must provide proof of current rabies vaccination for each pet and also proof from a licensed veterinarian if the animal has been spayed or neutered.

The City of Sully, along with other cities in Jasper County, is participating in a process to complete a countywide hazard mitigation plan. Completion of a mitigation plan is required by the state in order for cities to be eligible for emergency and disaster funding. As part of that plan the City of Sully is asking for citizen input regarding hazards that might affect our community and steps that might reduce or eliminate future hazard or disaster damages.
