netherlandsOn Saturday, April 30, fifthteen high school students from Holland will arrive Des Moines International Airport to spend fourteen days in Sully.  Jeff Corbett, Lynnville-Sully MS Math teacher has been corresponding and planning this trip with Holland teachers, Kate Van Wijck and Carla Salden for the past couple years.  Ms. Van Wijck is a graduate of Central College (Pella) and was a student teacher at Lynnville-Sully.  Each of the students will be staying with a host family in the Lynnville-Sully school district.  The objective for the students is to practice their use of the English language and gain a brief exposure to America’s education system, lifestyles, and business environment.

To accomplish their objective, several activities have been planned.  The students from Holland will spend time in the classroom with Lynnville-Sully and Sully Christian students.  They will participate in the Lynnville-Sully high school music concert where the national anthem for the Netherlands will be played. A meeting with Iowa’s Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds has been arranged during a tour of the state capital.   A highlight of the visit will be an opportunity to view and experience Pella’s version of a Dutch celebration.  They will be in one of the Tulip Time parades and it’s possible they may get to work in the Sully Lions Tulip Time food booth.  What a treat!

On four days of their visit, each Holland student has been assigned to work at a business that is in a field of study they’re interested in.   This will include places like Pella Hospital, Newton Clinic, Hy-Vee, First State Bank, Lynnville-Sully Vet Clinic, Lynnville-Sully and Sully Christian Schools, and others.  For fun activities, the students will be attending an Iowa Cubs baseball game, visiting a working farm, touring Iowa Speedway, visiting Kalona’s sale barn and eating an Amish lunch.

People in the community have an open invitation to attend a “Community Tea Time” at the Sully Community Center the afternoon of Tuesday, May 3rd.  The students from Holland will be available to talk with and answer questions that people have about the Netherlands.  They’re hopeful that people in the community, especially senior citizens will take this opportunity to come and speak the Dutch language with them.

On Friday, May 13th, the students will depart at 8am from Des Moines by bus to Chicago.  They will spend a couple days sightseeing before they will depart from O’Hare Airport for Holland.

Jasper County is in the process of developing a new website.   Laurie Jackson (Director Jasper County GIS) is asking for help from the residents of Jasper County.  If you have any digital photographs of community landmarks, landscape pictures, wildlife, or anything depicting life in Jasper County, she is asking you  to “share” them on the county’s new website.  Personal family pictures are not encouraged and should not be submitted.

If you submit a photo, please, please tell where it was shot or occurred within the county.  We do not want to be like other counties and have pictures that are not identifiable with a location.  Photos can be submitted via email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   Thank-you in advance for your help in making Jasper County’s website an enjoyable site for visitors.

county_fairThe Long Range Planning Committee of the Jasper County Fair Board will host a second Public Forum concerning the long range future of the Jasper County Fair on Tuesday April 12th at 7PM in the DMACC Auditorium.

We are asking for input from across the county and encourage you to bring information and ideas with you that evening. The committee will compile all of the comments and suggestions and take back to the board for review and consideration. We also are asking for any interested groups or parties that would like to join us at the fair each year and volunteer to help improve and showcase our county fair and its residents, to come to the meeting to learn more about what is in store for the future.

The Jasper County Fair has a rich heritage that dates back 150+ years here in the county. We are very proud of that history but we are challenged with the concept of continued living in a flood plain and finding a way to improve the conditions we have or looking for alternative sites for the next 150 years of the Jasper County Fair.

Our goal is to provide a fair for Jasper County well into the future that is educational, fun, safe, and economical for everyone involved.

The Jasper County Agricultural Society Foundation (501c.3) has been created to help us in our efforts to continue to provide the best fair event that Jasper County and central Iowa deserves. Information will also be available about the Foundation that night.

Please join us on April 12th at DMACC in Newton at 7PM as we continue to look into the future of the Jasper County Fair.
