american-flag"The American Dream" is the theme of the annual Fourth of July Celebration in Sully, Iowa, for 2012. Events will be held Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, June 30, July 1, 3, and 4. It takes many people to make it happen and many come back year after year for the traditional celebration in Sully. Everyone loves a parade and it's not too early to plan your parade entry, no pre-registration necessary.

PLEASE, NO PARKING AROUND THE SULLY SQUARE. Many Freedom Run participants and other out-of-town guests see cars parked and then they park too so if you need to unload supplies, please do so in the least amount of time possible.

The schedule of events is:

Friday, June 29: 4 p.m. Deadline to enter Sully 4th of July Photography Contest. 

Saturday, June 30: 8:15 a.m. Tractor Ride assembling on the north side of Sully square for ride to New Sharon, Barnes City, lunch in Montezuma, and back to Sully.

Sunday, July 1: 6 p.m. Community Worship at Sully square, take lawn chairs, worship led by Pastor Wayne Sneller of Sully First Reformed Church. Anyone willing may be part of the impromptu community choir singing "America the Beautiful" led by Verna Hackert and each church will also provide a ministry in music (rain location: Sully First Reformed Church).

Tuesday, July 3: 9 p.m. or dark, Fireworks Display launched in southeast part of Sully (rain date: July 4). 

Wednesday, July 4:

  • 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Fly-In at Sully Airport, weather permitting.
  • 7-9:30 a.m. Faithwalkers Breakfast at Sully Community Center. Menu includes pancakes, sausages, scrambled eggs, coffee, and juice.
  • 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Vote for Cutest Sully Baby (parents or grandparents must have a Sully address) near the breakfast and lunch lines. Half of proceeds to top vote-getter and half to a Sully community project.
  • 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Photography Contest Display in Sully Community Center.
  • 8 a.m. Morning Coffee and Donuts served by the Garden Thyme Club at the Deep Rock Station.
  • 8 a.m.-noon “Art in the Garden” Sale by Garden Thyme Club at the Deep Rock Station.alt
  • 8 a.m.-noon vote for the Cutest Sully Baby (parents or grandparents must have a Sully address) and entries due at Hometown Press or to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  by June 22. Take your change and even dollars to vote at the display in the Sully Community Center in the morning and afternoon, and weather permitting display will be near the Lions Club meal tent while lunch is served. Half of proceeds to top vote-getter and half to a community project.
  • 8-10 a.m. 17th Annual Sully Freedom Fun Run, one-mile and 5K, starting and ending on the west side of the Sully square with proceeds benefiting L-S Cross Country Team and Athletic Fund.
  • 8:30-9:45 a.m. Registration for the Parade at Sully First Reformed Church, any VETERANS willing to ride in the parade meet in front of the Sully family Health Center. Kiddie Parade entries meet by the Deep Rock Station.
  • 9:45 a.m. Flag Raising and Vander Leest Cannon Firing, southwest corner of the square.
  • 10-11 a.m. Parade through downtown Sully with grand marshal, cars, tractors, floats, bikes and trikes, and more. Kiddie entries of bikes, trikes, etc. will join the parade from the Deep Rock Station when parade officials give them the signal. Parade route is form Sully First Reformed Church's south parking lot at 807 3rd St., west on 3rd St. to the northeast corner of the square, south on the east side of the square, around the south and west sides of the square, to one block north of the square, and right (east) on 2nd St. three blocks to the church's north parking lot.
  • 11 a.m.-noon Jung's Tae Kwon Do Demonstration near inflatables: Board and brick breaking and self-defense by Master Forrest Gibson of Grinnell and his area students.
  • 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wine Tasting and Construction Updates at Van Wijk Winery.
  • 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Free Van Kooten Barrel Train Rides.
  • 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Carnival Games and Inflatables in Sully Central Park sponsored by Inspirationsalt Childcare and Preschool of Sully. Inspirations raffle of a very large, furry brown bear, Freddy the Teddy, made and donated by Colleen Castorf-tickets at $1 each or six for $5 for sale by Inspirations with winner drawn at 2 p.m.
  • 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Meal served by Sully Lions Club in tent located in the Sully square, tent seating available. All proceeds for Terry Van Maanen and family.
  • 11 a.m. (immediately after the parade) Coed Sand Volleyball Tournament at Sully Ballpark, register coed teams of up to six people by July 1 by calling Angie Ver Ploeg at 594-3210.
  • 12 p.m. noon Area Firefighters' Waterfights, near the fire station.
  • 1 p.m. Kids' Waterfights, ages 5-12.
  • 1-3 p.m. Music in the Community Center, including Kynlee James, Abby Gruver, Madison Johnson, Curt Braaksma, Russell Stravers, Lenis De Cook, Howard and Marilyn Vander Griend, and Tara Fransman and family, organized by Janise Gruver. Take lawn chairs or folding chairs will be available.
  • 1 p.m. Sully Fourth of July Softball Tournament at the Sully Ballpark. To register your team for the double-elimination tournament, please send an email to julyfourthtournament@hotmail,com, include your team captain(s), a cell phone number to reach you, and your team name. Deadline to register your team is June 28 and brackets will be announced July 2. Trent Alberts and Kyle Wipf are also available for additional questions. 
  • NEW EVENT: 2 p.m. EWI Nickel Scramble (3 age groups of kids finding as many nickels as theyalt can in one minute) following the closing of Inspirations carnival games and inflatables.
