2014_freedom_rock_washingA lot of activity is taking place around the Jasper County Freedom Rock in the Sully Central Park. An opportunity presented itself in May to allow the Freedom Rock to be painted the week of June 16. With that opportunity, the Freedom Rock committee has been working hard to finalize the memorial plans and get ready for Raymond “Bubba” Sorensen II to come to Sully to paint the rock. The site will be 24’ x 45’ and have the U.S., Iowa, and POW flags behind the rock. In front of the rock will be a 12’ x 14’ area for 663 pavers to be set. These pavers will be sold to families to place in honor of anyone that has served in the military service. The people do not need to have lived in Jasper County or Iowa. This is a memorial for service people and recognition of their service to our country. The pavers will be engraved with their name and service branch and whatever else will be allowed to fit. Watch for the order form in the Hometown Press, on the Sully website, and at area businesses on how and where to order and pay for these. Price will be $75 for the 4” x 8” and $125 for the 8” x 8”.

Activities for the week of June 2 are washing the rock (shown in progress by Gordon Yarrington June 3) and pouring concrete. The week of June 9, pavers (eventually to be replaced with engraved pavers) will be set in, flag poles set up, seating stones placed, landscaping, and set up tent over rock so painter can work rain or shine. Week of June 16, the rock will be painted, and the week of June 23 will be finishing painting the rock and removing the tent. During the week of June 30 will be finishing touches before the dedication at the Sully Fourth of July celebration. After July 4th, lights will be installed that will illuminate the rock and flags.

People are needed to donate towards this project. Some ideas are one of three flag poles at $800 each (one donated already), flags, seating stones are $290 (one donated already), five lighting fixtures at $800 each, and 17 yards of concrete at $100 per yard (eight yards donated already). Please contact, call, or stop one of the committee: Sheryl Van Wyk, Margaret Vander Weerdt, or Gordon Yarrington to let them know what you would like to contribute towards this veterans memorial. Once the project is completed, a permanent story board will be placed on site telling the story of how it came about with the list of donors to be included on it. The list of donors will also be published in the Hometown Press when the project is completed.

“Having gone on a Freedom Flight with my father last month,” Yarrington said, “this is so fitting to honor our veterans and to have the privilege to host the Jasper County Freedom Rock in Sully, Iowa. There is a video on the Sully website if you wish to see Bubba Sorenson and hear his story about the rocks in Iowa and his plan for each state and even the nation.”
