Senior Canyon Kuhlmann’s high school cross-country career culminated with a third trip to the state meet and a placement of 31st – his best finish at state – on Saturday, Oct. 31 , 2015 . Not only that, Kuhlmann ran the race in 17:41, his fastest time at state by 11 seconds. It was an impressive finish for the only boy in Lynnville-Sully cross-country history to run at the state meet more than twice.  Competing at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge, runners were greeted with cool temperatures, breezy conditions, and a soggy course , not exactly ideal conditions for running a 5K.

I've been privileged to see all of Canyon's races throughout his career, but in my opinion he saved his best for last,”  L-S Cross-Country Coach Arkema said. “That's saying quite a bit considering the number of fantastic races he has had, even just this season. He was smart and patient at the start, running within himself and not out crazy fast.”

By the mile mark, Kuhlmann was in the top 50, positioned well in the pack to be ready to move during the middle mile, where the course has more rolling terrain. Hills are a strength for Kuhlmann. At the two-mile mark, Kuhlmann had gained about a dozen places or so and looked relaxed yet determined to finish hard the last mile. He made some strong passes with a half mile to go, and around the last turn into the final 200 meters, changed gears a few more times, fighting all the way to the finish line. He was the 31st of 152 runners to cross the line – his highest finish at the state meet by 18 places.

I can't say enough about the commitment he has made and the impact he has had on our program,” Arkema shared. “I know his running days are far from over, and already has talked about goals for the track season. He certainly has reason to be proud of his accomplishments from Saturday, this season, and his career in cross-country and I've been honored to coach him.”
