The year 2013 marks the 30th year Family Dentistry has been providing dental services in its satellite clinic in Sully. With its main office in Grinnell, Family Dentistry has satellite clinics in Sully and Victor, and just this past summer opened its third satellite office in Montezuma.

Opening the Sully clinic on June 1, 1983, in the old bank building, their first five-year lease with the Sully Development Corporation has developed into a long-standing relationship with The Sully Foundation.

"The dentists are the only professionals who have stayed continuously at the Sully Health and Professional Center since the old bank building became available in 1983," said Margaret Vander Weerdt, president of The Sully Foundation, the non-profit that was gifted the building. "Thirty years of providing dental service to the area is awesome, and it is a gratifying example that the building was remodeled, the professional service providers came, and because of the community support, they stayed -- and the facility continues to be fully utilized in service to the community."

Originally, the dental clinic had two operatories with three dentists alternating and providing services a half day on Mondays and Wednesdays and a full day every Friday. The first three dentists providing services in 1983 included Peter R. Boeke, DDS; Lyle T. Roudabush, DDS; and David M. Smith, DDS. After the physicians who shared the Sully Health and Professional Center left for a new clinic on the northeast corner of the square, one more dental operatory was added, which allowed two hygienists to work with the dentist. This allowed more patients to be seen by one dentist.

Chris T. Roudabush, DDS, began practicing at the Sully location in 1997. Growing up in Grinnell, Chris prepared to follow in his father's footsteps. After graduating from Central College, he attended the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Besides practicing in Sully, Chris is at the Montezuma clinic on alternating Fridays and works in Grinnell on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Chris is the only dentist that practices at the clinic in Sully. There are currently five employees at the Sully clinic: Michelle Heinselman and Carly Rhoads are the two hygienists; Jacque Patterson and Ashley Barnes are both dental assistants; and Nancy Van Genderen is the receptionist. The clinic provides all types of denetal services including, but not limited to, fillings, cleanings, root canals, crown and bridge, extractions/dental surgery, implants, and Invisalign.

"We pride ourselves in using only the best materials and products and incorporating the latest technologies in our treatment for our patients. That is why we recently updated the Sully clinic with new dental equipment, digital x-rays, television monitors, and computers in all of the operatories," Chris explained.

"Most of the patients who are served in the Sully clinic are from the Lynnville-Sully area, but we have patients that come from all over Iowa. One of our constant challenges is removing barriers to provide access to dental care, such as transportation, cost, fears, and convenience for school-aged kids, the elderly, and the working people," Chris said.

Chris lives outside of Grinnell with Jody, his wife of 22 years. They have three children, Sydney who is 17 years old, 15-year-old Luke, and Lydia who is 11 years old. He continues to be an avid Hawkeye fan and enjoys coaching his kids in their various sporting activities. He said he enjoys "chasing the white ball around the golf course and spending time outdoors whenever possible." Their family attends Prairie Lakes Church in Grinnell.

"We have really enjoyed being a part of the Sully business community since opening 1983," Chris said. "It has been a great partnership, and we have always felt welcomed and valued. It has given me an opportunity to meet a lot of neat, high-quality people and families and build relationships that have extended beyond the office. I have admired the community pride and loyalty of the people."
